Firefighters Refuse to Distribute Safety Leaflets at Gay Pride Event

You know, sometimes you just have to facepalm. :/ Check this out:

Gay snub firefighters disciplined

Basically, a bunch of firefighters in Glasgow were told to hand out fire safety leaflets at a gay pride march. They apparently do this sort of thing regularly at community events, and this was a community event. Props to the higher-ups for not discriminating against this particular event. Nine of the firefighters refused because, OMG teh gay! One of them, a watch manager, has been demoted to crew manager, with a five thousand pound pay cut, and all nine are being sent to diversity training. 'Cause, you know, you're responsible for protecting everyone in your area, guys, not just the ones who fuck the same way you do.

A Bishop who said, "The duty to obey one's conscience is a higher duty than that of obeying orders," needs a good kick in the ass. [sigh] I mean, I agree with the sentiment in general, but I think this particular application of it is flawed. Unless there's some higher Christian principle that says it's OK to let sinners pull their electrical plugs out by the cord and end up having their homes burned down, when the alternative is going among them with fire safety leaflets and seeing men dressed up as nuns...? [/sarcasm] And even if they think it's morally right to be a jerk about it and let the gays burn, what if the fire spread next door to where straight people lived? [eyeroll] This is just incredibly stupid -- it doesn't work either morally or pragmatically. Enlightened self-interest should have them spreading fire safety information everywhere, no matter what their opinions are about this or that individual group of people. Crack house? Leaflets. KKK clubhouse? Leaflets. Old Pedophile's retirement home? Leaflets. Because neither fire nor the smoke from it (which is what kills most people) are going to stop at property lines, once they get going.

Aside from the fact that they're, like, firefighters, and fire safety education what they're supposed to be doing.
