Update on A Lost Boy

The good news is we're close to the end. I can see where I want to wrap this, if I squint a bit, and I'm pretty sure I have a handle on the steps it'll take to get there.

The bad news is that I'm going to be slowing down now. [hides in concrete bunker]

Endings, especially on longer stories, are always the hardest part for me. Starting is easy -- romping around flinging bits and pieces and plot threads right and left, tossing in whatever feels right or fun or cool, fleshing this bit out and complicating that bit however you like. The end, though, is where all those scattered threads have to be pulled together and woven into a reasonably neat and satisfying ending. The main plotline needs to end last, with secondary plotlines wrapping up either at the same time or shortly before. Minor details can go in after the climax, but not to many; that chunk is called anti-climatic for a reason.

So it's not just knowing what to do, it's also a matter of imposing the proper pace and timing on everything, so that the ending feels like an actual ending, and is satisfying. I think I'm in a pretty good spot, and things are lined up reasonably well, but I won't know for sure until I write it. And since everything needs to end in a balanced and orderly fashion, I might need to go back and tweak Chapter N-2 while I'm writing Chapter N, or something like that. So I'm going to get at least a couple of chapters ahead before I start posting again, to give me enough buffer to do tweaks before posting if I find I need to.

This isn't a hiatus; it's just a slow-down. I'm not going to go away for six months or one month; I'm not expecting it to take even a week. Heck, I might finish it all this weekend, although I'm not going to count on it. I'll be very surprised if I don't get at least one chapter posted next week.

I'm amazed with myself that I've been able to keep up 3/week for so long, let alone the 5/week I did for two glorious weeks in October. I want to thank everyone who's been so wonderfully encouraging all along; your feedback and appreciation have kept me going and made this an awesome project to work on. :) I don't want to blow it at the end, though, so I'm going to take some extra time and do it right.

More soon. I appreciate everyone's patience. {{}}
